It is not always easy to know what is best for you when you want to buy a hair prosthesis hair the first time. It is important to consider various factors in order to make an informed choice. In this article, I explain how to choose between these two types of products depending on your type of hair loss.
The hair topper: the best choice for moderate androgenic alopecia.

The hair topper is a partial hair prosthesis that is particularly suitable for classic androgenic alopecia. It blends into your hair for a natural and completely undetectable result. As long as a woman has enough hair to clip on the hair topper, it remains in my opinion the preferred option for comfort (it is lighter to wear than a wig and is therefore less restrictive in daily life).
But what does "enough hair" mean? One can have a very marked androgenic alopecia and succeed without any problem in fixing one's hair topper (I am a very good example). On the other hand, if the scalp is really sparse, with almost no hair left (very visible skull), a wig should be considered. Because without enough hair, the hair topper will tend to slip, which is very uncomfortable.
The wig
Very advanced androgenic alopecia
As explained above, it is better to opt for a wig in case of very advanced androgenic alopecia. If the scalp is very thin, the hair topper will not hold and will make the area of alopecia even more fragile.
Alopecia areata
In the case of patches of hair loss, a wig is also recommended. Indeed, as the size and location of the patches of hair loss can change over time, the hair topper may no longer click in certain areas after a few months, which would make the product less secure. However, if the patch is very small and does not seem to evolve much, it may be possible to opt for a hair topper. Because it is not necessarily psychologically easy to switch directly to a wig and this is also a criterion to be taken into account. If the plaque should develop, the clip should be removed and sewn back on in an area not affected by alopecia to ensure that the hair topper will hold.
Total or universal alopecia
In cases of total or universal alopecia (complete absence of hair), a wig will be the only option to consider.
Hair loss related to cancer treatments
Cancer treatments can lead to a total loss of hair. In this case, a wig would also be appropriate, rather than a hair topper.
Trichotillomania
In the case of trichotillomania, a hair topper or a wig may be considered depending on the extent of the alopecia. In case of very marked alopecia on the top of the head, and even if the frontal border is not affected, the wig will be preferred.
Sensitivity to clips
Some women have a particularly sensitive scalp and cannot tolerate the clips of a hair topper. In this case, the sensitive grip, or wig, can be an interesting option. A wig has two clips that are attached above the ears. This area is usually less sensitive than the top of the head. If the wig is the right size, it is also possible not to use these two clips.
For the pleasure of changing your hairstyle whenever you feel like it!
Finally, if you love the unmatched volume that a wig provides or want to easily change colors and lengths without touching your own hair, a wig is the ideal choice!

Find toppers and wigs like a tiara:

Hello,
I have just discovered that I have alopecia. For the moment, despite having three hairs on my head, I manage to hide it, but in my mind I already see myself as almost bald! What do you think of topper wigs? Aren't they uncomfortable? Have you had any problems, such as people pulling on the wig or it coming off, etc.? Can you tie your hair up?
Thank you.
