On May 6, 2023, after an 18-year relationship with my now husband, I finally got married. It took him a while to propose! I was obviously looking forward to this wedding! But I was also very apprehensive because I've been suffering from androgenetic alopecia since the age of 20. So I had to find a solution to look my best on the big day 😉
As you probably know, topper was obviously my solution, but it wasn't without a few doubts and misgivings. I tell you all about it in this article!
My apprehensions
I was diagnosed with androgenetic alopecia when I was 20. At the time, it wasn't that noticeable. But 10 years later, my scalp really started to thin out and my alopecia became visible. I often thought about my future wedding with apprehension. How was I going to feel beautiful on that day? Would I be able to achieve a decent hairstyle? All this made me very anxious and sad.
To be honest, sometimes I even resented my partner for not proposing sooner because of this. I told myself that the longer he waited, the more disastrous and pitiful the result would be.
But around 30 was also the age when I wore my first hair topper . Discovering this solution was a real relief for me in my daily life. But it also took away those apprehensions about my future marriage! I now knew that I'd be able to feel good on that day, despite my alopecia, which was progressing year by year.
This is the state of my alopecia a few weeks before my wedding:
It may not seem catastrophic here. But my alopecia is so extensive that it would have been really complicated to have a nice hairstyle. I would have had to apply a lot of densifying powder. And the chignon would inevitably have had very little volume, which I think would have ruined the look on the wedding day.
A hair topper , yes, but with which hairstyle?
I was finally relieved to know that I'd have hair worthy of the name for the big day. But being a regular user of hair topper , I also know that the product can sometimes move around a bit during the day. My hairline is very bald. So the slightest shift of a few millimeters can quickly become visible (at least to me). On a day-to-day basis, I know I have the reflex to check from time to time that everything is in place. But I knew I wouldn't necessarily have the opportunity to do so on the big day. I was also worried that the bun wouldn't last and that I'd turn into a pumpkin with a toupee after midnight!
So my first thought was to opt for a romantic hairstyle with my hair loose. Because I thought that the pressure at the back would be less than with a voluminous chignon, and that a simpler structure at the outset might be less difficult to hold over time.
But during the fittings, the hairdresser also gave me a try with a chignon. And it was a revelation! Surprisingly, I felt that my hair was much more secure, and that it didn't pull back at all, as I'd expected!
Take a look at the two hairstyles I tested on video (French version, English version also online on the channel):
I hesitated for a long time, however, because I didn't know in advance what it would look like on such a hectic day as a wedding. But deep down, I knew I wanted a bun to go with my Disney princess dress! So I decided to make my choice not based on my alopecia, topper and the stress associated with it, but rather on what I really wanted deep down.
So I took a chance and opted for the chignon for the wedding!
In concrete terms, how did things go on D-day?
On the big day, the hairdresser had placed around fifty pins in my bun to secure it! The topper didn't move a millimeter, from 9am to 5am. I didn't even really feel the need to check it several times during the day, as I could feel that it wasn't moving. I had put a little densifying powder on the front edge just in case, to secure myself in the event of a slight recoil of the topper.
I was so afraid that the topper would move, that I wouldn't feel it and then realize that it was visible in the photos (and therefore potentially visible to everyone at the wedding).
But during the day, then the evening, I could feel that it was perfectly in place! Because you can feel a topper backing up. I was able to move around, dance to my heart's content, carry my children. In short, I had complete freedom of movement.
I received over 1000 wedding photos. I don't know how many of them are of me, but I can say that my topper is not visible in ANY of them! And that was a real relief for me. I wasn't afraid that people would realize at the wedding that I was wearing a topper. Everyone knows I'm wearing it because I don't hide it. But I didn't want my wedding photos to be spoiled by a badly positioned toupee!
So today I'm really happy to be able to assure you that yes, you can look perfect on your big day with a topper!
My advice is to choose a hairdresser who specializes in weddings and is gifted in her field. She'll know how to work with hair topper , even if it's her first time using this type of product. Don't hesitate to have the roots touched up if the color is a little lighter than yours. This will help bring out the color, and the result will still be very natural (this is what I did with my topper Anaïs, which is initially much lighter than my hair).

I'm undergoing chemo and I'm losing my hair, it's thinning.
I was told about topper but then I was also told that as they will be more fragile the clips won't hold so what can I do?
There's also a risk that the clips will damage the remaining hair and cause it to fall out.
What do you recommend?
Or a wig, but I've got hair but it's massively bent.
I also have curly hair
Good morning, madam,
Women with alopecia have fine hair, and toppers is designed precisely for fragile, fine hair.
What's more, to hold the topper in place, rather than using clips, you can use sensitive grips.
Here are two links that explain all about this new process: https: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=uu1TXN8Zwc0
