When you first acquire a hair topper or a wig because you have androgenetic alopecia, you can sometimes be a little confused about what you need to have on hand to be comfortable with your product.
It is indeed important to know the accessories that facilitate our daily life with a prosthesis hair. I have been wearing a hair topper for more than 5 years now. I had the opportunity, especially in the context of my activity, to test many products, of different brands, more or less interesting to maintain my toppers and wigs. Discover in this article the essential accessories that I recommend you with my eyes closed!
Store and style your hair topper or wig
You can safely store your hair topper or wig every night in a box or small pouch, or even out in a drawer. However, you'll have to be careful with the shape the hair will take so you don't end up with a bad crease that's hard to discipline 😉 No one wants to waste 30 minutes shaping their alternative hair in the morning!
I therefore recommend to put your hair topper or wig on a cork wig head. This way, the hair will keep its initial shape and will be ready to wear in the morning.

The hair topper or the wig can be attached to the product, using T-pins inserted through the clips.
I realize that having a wig head in the middle of your apartment might seem creepy at first glance 😉
But:
1) I assure you that you'll get used to it! Yes, yes, even your husband will get used to it.
and 2) you can get a small tripod that you can attach to a closet if you want something more discreet (which I can understand, even though I love showing off my foxes to anyone who wants to see them #thoughtsformyfrightenedneighbors)
The wig head is especially ESSENTIAL when you want to let your hair air-dry, but especially when you want to blow-dry, straighten or curl your hair topper. In my opinion, it's THE must-have when entering the wonderful world of alternative hair!
There are polystyrene wig heads available, which are slightly cheaper, but after trying them out, I find them to be of much lower quality and less pleasant to use on a daily basis.
The super girly pink tripod I use every day (if you have a large tripod at home to show off your hair every day to your family, which I obviously recommend 😉
Shape your hair topper or wig
Now that you have your tripod to fix your hair topper or wig, you will finally be able to shape it easily.
You can let your hair dry naturally, blow dry it, or curl it with ease. That's the joy of natural hair—you can treat it just like your own!
For my part, I chose to use high-quality equipment because I handle a lot of products on a daily basis as part of my business selling toppers and wigs. So I quickly opted for the GHD brand, which for me is synonymous with efficiency, speed, and reliability (the devices heat up quickly and are durable).
For blow-drying, I use the GHD Air hair dryer.
Before wearing my hair topper, I often need to straighten my hair so that its structure blends in a little more with the very straight hair of my hair topper. For this, I use the GHD glide straightening brush, which I can wholeheartedly recommend as I've been using it for several years now. I also use it to quickly straighten my topper when it has a bad crease and it's very effective:
To curl the toppers and wigs on the site, I use the GHD Curve curling iron. After testing several different brands, including Remington and Dyson, which I do not recommend at all, this is my favorite because it heats up extremely quickly while being lightweight and very easy to use:

Everyday accessories
After a few months or years of use, one or more clips on topper may topper . They will then need to be replaced. I recommend using clips with pads. They will cause less damage and breakage to your hair:
I would always advise you to have spare clips so that you don't find yourself in a tricky situation if one of them breaks (they don't warn you ;)).
For women who want to wear a cap under their wig, I recommend soft caps with holes, as these make it easier to reposition your hair inside the cap once it is on your head, and they are very breathable. I personally use these caps in particular:
For brushing, I use a Tangle Teezer brush, which doesn't break my hair or the hair on toppers. For toppers and wigs with curly, wavy, or frizzy hair, wide-toothed combs allow you to comb the hair without breaking the curls.
In addition, I use combs. They help me position my model, especially to bring out a few strands at the front.
Taking care of your model
After several months or years of wear, if your model's hair becomes dry, you can apply Silicon Mix or any mask for very dry hair. This will smooth and moisturize the hair fiber.
With all this, you will be able to take care of your hair topper and wig on a daily basis with complete peace of mind. Of course, you can also use other brands to take care of your product without any problem. The important thing is to find the ones that suit you best and make you feel comfortable with your new hair!

Hello, Laure,
Thank you for this article, which is a real survival kit for beginners to toppers , myself included.
I have a quick question about GHD accessories (straighteners and curling irons). Their heating temperature is 185 degrees.
Isn't there a risk that this temperature, even when used occasionally, could damage the hair on topper? It's always tricky to find a compromise between effectiveness (quality of straightening or curling) and hair health. When you invest in beautiful hair, you want it to last as long as possible. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the subject.
Thank you for the content you create every day about toppers !
See you soon,
