It is not always easy to know what suits us best when we want to acquire a hair prosthesis for the first time. Indeed, it is important to take into account different aspects in order to make an informed choice. In this article, I explain how to choose between these two types of products based on your alopecia.

The hair topper is a partial hair prosthesis that is particularly suitable for classic androgenetic alopecia. It blends with your hair for a natural and completely undetectable result. As long as a woman has enough hair to clip the topper, it remains the preferred option for comfort (it is lighter to wear than a wig and therefore less restrictive on a daily basis).

But what do we mean by 'enough hair'? One can have very pronounced androgenetic alopecia and still manage to secure their topper (I am a very good example of this). However, if the scalp is really very thinning, with almost no hair left (very visible scalp), a wig should be considered instead. Because in the absence of a sufficient amount of hair, the hair topper will tend to slip, which is very uncomfortable.

Advanced androgenetic alopecia

As explained earlier, it is preferable to opt for a wig in cases of very advanced androgenetic alopecia. If the scalp is really very thinning, the topper will not hold and will further weaken the area of alopecia.

Pelade

In case of alopecia patches, a wig will also be recommended. Indeed, as alopecia patches can evolve over time in size and location, the hair topper may no longer clip in certain areas after a few months, making the product's hold less secure. However, if the patch is very small and seems unlikely to change, it may be possible to opt for a hair topper. It is not necessarily easy psychologically to go directly to a wig, and this is also a factor to consider. If the patch evolves, the clip will need to be unstitched and resewn in an area not affected by alopecia to secure the hold of the hair topper.

Total or universal alopecia

In cases of total or universal alopecia (total absence of hair), the wig will be the only option to consider.

Hair loss related to cancer treatments

Cancer treatments can lead to total hair loss. In this case, a wig will also be indicated, rather than a hair topper.

Trichotillomanie

In cases of trichotillomania, the hair topper or wig may be considered depending on the extent of the alopecia. In cases of significant alopecia on the top of the head, even if the frontal hairline is not affected, the wig should be prioritized.

Sensitivity to clips

Some women have particularly sensitive scalps and cannot tolerate the clips of a hair topper. In this case, sensitive grip or a wig may be an interesting option. A wig has two clips that attach above the ears. This area is generally less sensitive than the top of the head. If the wig is the right size, it is also possible not to use these two clips.

    I just discovered my alopecia for now, despite my three in my hair I manage to hide it, but in my mind I already see myself almost bald! What do you think of the hair topper and the wig, isn't it uncomfortable? Have you had any problems, for example: pulling on the wig or it coming off, etc.? Can you tie your hair up?

All out-of-stock models are regularly restocked. However, it is not possible to provide a precise restock timeframe for each model. If you are interested in a model, we recommend subscribing to restock alerts to receive an email as soon as the product is available again on the site.

Orders are delivered within less than 10 days in metropolitan France, Belgium, and Switzerland. For international orders, delivery times may be slightly longer.

We use Brazilian natural 'Remy' hair. The term 'Remy' means that the hair and the cuticles of the strand are aligned in the same direction on the hair topper. Unlike non-'Remy' hair, which is assembled in bulk. They tend to tangle and damage more easily.

You should choose the base size of the hair topper based on the extent of your alopecia and the hair density you wish to achieve. Indeed, it is preferable that the clips are not attached in the alopecia area where the scalp can be quite sensitive. Additionally, extensive alopecia will require a significant hair density to compensate for the low initial density.

We recommend base sizes of 8 x 8" or 8 x 8" for extensive alopecia. These bases will provide real coverage, density, and comfort of use. Larger base sizes are available for very significant alopecia.

Smaller bases (6 x 6") will provide slightly less density to the hair. However, they will allow for easier high ponytails.

We offer hair toppers with a density between 120 and 130%. This density is considered standard among international brands.

The hair is straight. Unless it is indicated in the title of the product sheet and in the description that the model is naturally wavy or curly.

The lifespan of a hair topper will partly depend on how well it is cared for. The typical lifespan is between one and two years. To extend the lifespan of your hair topper, it should not be washed too frequently.

The hair topper should be brushed carefully after being worn. It is practical to place it on a wig stand. This way, the hair does not get a bad crease before the next use.

Hair should not be washed too frequently. Maintenance every 4 weeks or more is a good rhythm. You should close the clips before washing the hair and detangle the hair before and after washing. You can use a gentle shampoo for colored hair followed by a conditioner. The “Orchid oil” shampoo and “Brazilian keratin” conditioner have proven effective!

In case of dry ends, we recommend adding a bit of argan oil to hydrate the hair fiber.

Natural hair can be heated, straightened, and curled without any problem. However, as with your own hair, it should not be overdone to avoid damaging the hair fiber.

The hair of the hair toppers has generally undergone complex bleaching and coloring processes before reaching its final color. These hairs have therefore been sensitized. They may react unexpectedly to a coloring or bleaching process. It is generally possible to darken a hair topper. However, it is not recommended to bleach it as this could alter the hair. Thus, in case of doubt between two shades for the hair color to choose, it is better to select the lighter hair shade. In any case, it is important to have the hair topper colored or bleached by a professional colorist who is accustomed to working with this type of hair. The hair toppers Comme un diadème are sold uncut. At first try, the hair topper may seem ill-suited to your face and/or hairstyle. However, a raw piece requires you to make it your own so that it completely suits you. We therefore recommend that if the color, length, and base size suit you, to have the hair topper cut by a hairstylist so that it can blend naturally with your own hair.
