When acquiring a hair topper or a wig for the first time due to androgenetic alopecia, one can sometimes feel a bit lost regarding what is necessary to have on hand to feel comfortable with the product.
It is indeed important to know the accessories that facilitate our daily life with a hair prosthesis. I have been wearing a hair topper for over 5 years now. I have had the opportunity, particularly in the context of my work, to test many products from different brands, more or less interesting for maintaining my hair toppers and wigs. Discover in this article the essential accessories that I wholeheartedly recommend!
Storing and styling your hair topper or wig
You can easily store your hair topper or wig each night in a box or a small pouch, or even out in the open in a drawer. However, you need to be careful about the shape the hair takes to avoid ending up with an awkward crease that's hard to manage 😉 No one wants to spend 30 minutes styling their alternative hair in the morning!
I therefore recommend placing your hair topper or wig on a cork wig head. This way, the hair will retain its original shape and be ready to wear in the morning.

The hair topper or wig can be secured to the product using T-pins inserted through the clips.
I am aware that having a wig head in the middle of your apartment may seem creepy at first glance 😉
Mais:
1) I assure you that you get used to it! Yes, yes, even the husband will get used to it
and 2) you can have a small tripod that you fix in a closet if you want something more discreet (which I can understand, even if I love to show off my foxes to anyone who wants to see them #thoughtforfrightenedneighbors)
Wig head This will be especially ESSENTIAL when you want to let the hair air dry, but especially when blow-drying, straightening, or curling the hair of your hair topper. This is, in my opinion, THE must-have when entering the wonderful world of alternative hair!
There are polystyrene wig heads, which are a bit cheaper, but after trying them, I find them much less qualitative and pleasant to use on a daily basis.
The pink tripod super girly that I use daily (if you can handle a large tripod at home to showcase your toupee to your family every day, which I obviously recommend 😉
Style your hair topper or wig
Now that you have your tripod to secure your hair topper or wig, you can finally style it easily.
You can let the hair dry in the open air, blow-dry it or even curl it with ease. That's the joy of natural hair, you can treat it exactly like your own!
For my part, I chose to use quality equipment because I handle a lot of products daily in my business of selling hair toppers and wigs. I quickly opted for the GHD brand, which for me symbolizes efficiency, speed, and reliability (the devices heat up quickly and last over time).
For styling, I use the GHD Air hair dryer.
Before wearing my hair topper, I often need to straighten my hair so that its structure blends a bit more with the very smooth hair of my hair topper. For this, I use the brosse lissante GHD glidewhich I recommend wholeheartedly as I have been using it for several years now. I also use it to quickly straighten my topper when it has a bad crease, and it works very effectively:
To curl the hair toppers and wigs from the site, I use the boucleur GHD curveAfter testing several from different brands, including Remington and Dyson which I do not recommend at all, this is the one I prefer because it heats up extremely quickly while being lightweight and very maneuverable:

Everyday accessories
It may happen that after a few months or years of use, one or more clips of the topper break. They need to be replaced. I recommend using cushioned clipsThey will damage and break your hair less:
I would always advise having spare clips on hand so you don't find yourself in a tricky situation if one of them breaks (they don't give warning ;)).

For women wishing to wear a cap under their wig, I recommend soft, holey caps as it is easier to reposition our hair in the cap once it is on our head, and they are very breathable. I personally use these particular caps:
For brushing, I use a brush from the Tangle Teezer brand that does not break my hair or that of the hair toppers. For hair toppers and wigs with curly, wavy, or frizzy hair, wide-toothed combs allow you to comb the hair without breaking the curl.
Additionally, I use combs. They help me position my model, especially to bring out a few strands at the front.
Taking care of your model
After several months or years of wear, if your model's hair becomes dry, you can apply Silicon Mix or any mask for very dry hair. This will help smooth and hydrate the hair fiber.
With all this, you can take care of your hair topper and wig daily with complete peace of mind. You can obviously use other brands without any problem to care for your product. The important thing is to find those that suit you best and make you feel comfortable with your new hair!

Bonjour Laure,
Thank you for this article which is a true survival kit for beginners in hair toppers, of which I am one.
I have a small question regarding GHD accessories (straightener and curling iron). Their heating temperature is 185 degrees.
Isn't there a risk that this temperature, even used occasionally, could damage the hair of the topper? It's always tricky to find a compromise between effectiveness (quality of straightening, curling) and hair health. When you invest in beautiful hair, you want it to stay that way for as long as possible. I would be interested to know your thoughts on the subject.
Thank you for the content you create daily on hair toppers!
See you soon,
Thank you for these tips, but the links to 'Amazon' are not working... Could you please provide the reference for the cork wig head?
And regarding hair washing, what shampoo and mask do you recommend?
