Can you swim with your supplement hair?
Since the launch of Comme un diadème in 2020, this is probably one of the questions I get asked the most by women who want to buy a prosthesis hair ! To think that 3/4 of them live their lives on vacation year round! 😁 🌊
I'm just kidding because I know that there is actually a slight anxiety behind this question to deal with the moments when you can't wear the product when you finally get used to your new image. That's why the question of sport comes up regularly too.
So I'll stop my little suspense: the answer is YES! 🥳 You can safely swim in the pool or the sea with your hair topper or wig. The toppers and wigs Comme un diadème are made of natural hair. They will react like your own hair to the contact of sea water or chlorinated water of the swimming pool. They will absolutely not self-destruct in contact with water, and fortunately.
However, as we know, sea salt and chlorine can dry out and damage natural hair. The ones from topper or the wig are unfortunately no exception. Moreover, they do not grow back and have a certain price so I would advise you to preserve them as much as possible by avoiding putting your head under water. It is also possible that the structure of the topper or wig will become visible once the hair gets wet so let's avoid taking unnecessary risks 😁
Watch out for the sun ☀️ !
It's not the pool or the sea that are most "dangerous" to your hair topper or wig on vacation, but the sun ☀️. The toppers, especially those with light hair, such as light browns and blondes, are particularly sensitive to the sun. These styles may experience color fading if exposed to very high light intensities for several days or weeks. Blondes will tend to turn yellow and light browns will lighten significantly.
On holiday, I would therefore advise you to protect your product by wearing hats or staying in the shade as much as possible. This will protect your skin at the same time #discoursderabatjoie 😁.
Brown hair and European hair (Leila, Meghan, Chicago, Katie, Sofia, Kate) are less sensitive because they are virgin and therefore less affected by the bleaching/colouring process. The colour will therefore lighten more gradually and naturally over time.
With daily use, i.e. outside the vacation period, a hair topper light brown or blond hair will also tend to lighten a tone or two after a few months. So don't hesitate to have the color refreshed after a year of daily wear if you want to give your hair topper a new glow.
I am sometimes asked if the hair protection oil is effective in protecting the hair from the hair topper. I can't vouch for this because I don't think it's verifiable. I personally would not have taken the risk with any of my hair toppers.
Sunscreen can turn your hair topper pink 😱
When applying sunscreen, be careful not to run your hand through the hair of hair topper or your wig, especially for blonds. Indeed, this can alter the color of your hair in a surprising way. Indeed, it could then sport pink highlights not necessarily desired 💕 You also have to be careful with hydroalcoholic gel and all products containing alcohol.
My best advice: Don't wear anything and enjoy life!
For women with moderate alopecia, or in any case who do not attract outside attention, I would advise not to wear the hair topper or your wig to the sea or the pool.
Why put yourself through such a strain when you can still enjoy going out freely? This will not necessarily always be the case and my opinion is that you should take advantage of it while you still can! Because it's clear that when our alopecia becomes visible to everyone, it's much less easy to deal with.
This is just my opinion, but wearing a hair topper when you're on vacation and it's hot, is a constraint that is hard to bear. The hair topper or the wig are not there to lock you into a life of constraint. They are not products that should make you hide 24 hours a day. They are simply products that can allow you to feel beautiful whenever you want.
But wearing a topper in 35°C weather is not a pleasant thing to do, so I advise you not to do this to yourself if your alopecia allows it. People on the beach, or by the pool, will not look at your scalp. Anyway, everyone gets their hair messed up at the beach, it's all part of the game 😉
Give yourself a break, and wear a cap, hat or headband if necessary.
For women who have a lot of alopecia that people notice, I can see that it is more complicated to consider. The cap or the densifying powder can then be a solution. But if this is not enough, I can understand why you might still want to wear your prosthesis.
Acceptance at all costs is not something that should be imposed. Each woman must move forward according to her alopecia, her complex and what is acceptable for her. The current "body positive" speeches push us to show our complexes, to accept them and to change the mentalities on the standards of beauty. These are Instagramable speeches easy to write in 5 minutes on his couch.
But a woman who walks down the street or goes to the beach with significant alopecia does not necessarily want to carry the burden of changing mentalities about beauty standards or becoming a model of self-acceptance. One has the right not to accept to show one's alopecia, one's complex, for all to see. It is a private matter and each person should have the choice to manage it as she wishes. The choice to keep one's alopecia to oneself is a choice that is just as respectable as the choice to show oneself as we are.
So it's important that you feel comfortable while on vacation. And if that means wearing a hair supplement to cover up your androgenetic alopecia at the beach or pool, there's no problem and you can do it without damaging your product.
