Before I started wearing a hair hair topper at the age of 30, I used densifying powder for a long time to mask my androgenetic alopecia. I tested powders from several different brands, for several years, on an ad hoc basis. I can therefore share with you today a reliable and objective opinion on densifying powder as a solution to androgenetic alopecia.
Is it effective in masking alopecia? How does it work on a daily basis? Which brands can I recommend? Why did I decide to switch to another solution after a few years of use?
I tell you everything in this article!
What is densifying powder?
Densifying powder is a keratin powder that attaches to the fiber hair by electrostatic effect and gives a density effect when the product is sprinkled on the scalp.
The result is quite effective, as you can see on this picture:
I was never able to determine exactly if the product actually binds to the fiber hair, as advertised by the various brands, or if it dyes the scalp, but the result was very satisfying for me.
At the age of 27, my androgenic alopecia started to become quite visible. Indeed, over the years, my scalp became progressively quite thin, which started to give me a complex. I then started using Kmax brand densifying powder, which is composed solely of Keratin and silica. For certain occasions such as weddings, job interviews, parties with friends, I wanted to feel better and be really confident. So I used the densifying powder quite regularly to mask my androgenetic alopecia.
Application and use
The product is very easy to apply. Just sprinkle it on thinning areas and they immediately become less visible. It doesn't leave any traces when you run your hand through your hair, or on your face at the end of the day. I didn't get any streaks on my pillows either. It doesn't run with the rain, although I wouldn't recommend standing with your head in the rain if you have a lot of powder on your head, let's not tempt fate 😉
The product stays on the scalp for several days without any problem, although it is better to apply a little in the morning for an optimal result. It washes off very easily with each shampoo.
Brands I have tested and recommend
Over the years I have tried several brands of densifying powder. The one I used the most was the Kmax brand, which I was really happy with. I initially chose this brand for its composition. Indeed, this powder is only composed of Keratin and Silica. Then I was able to test the Toppik brand which is also very effective.
As part of a partnership, I also received the densifying powder from Ultimane. This powder is also a good alternative for women who are looking for a 100% natural composition, based on cotton fiber. However, the disadvantage is that it spreads a little less evenly on the fiber hair compared to the two previous ones.
At 30, I'm switching to a more effective solution for me!
Although this product is very effective in masking my hair loss, I never really enjoyed applying it. I found it quite humiliating to have to sprinkle a product that would hide my "holes". In addition, the more my alopecia progressed, the more product I had to put on my head. At first, I was only supposed to sprinkle it on my forehead.
But after a few years, I was reduced to emptying a huge amount all over my head (on top, on the sides, in front, behind... in short! Everywhere). It was when I realized that I had to use almost half a jar on my head every time I used it that I decided that this solution might not be the best one for me anymore.
This is partly why I decided to switch to hair hair topper at the age of 30. This works better for me because it provides real hair density, compared to powder which I feel only has a "hiding" effect. I didn't enjoy using the densifying powder. I just felt like I was covering up my problem and I was ashamed to have to use this type of product. But when I clip on a hair topper, I get a "wow" effect that really transforms me and makes me feel beautiful.
However, I always have a jar of densifying powder at home because I still use this product occasionally, especially with pony toppers. The pony toppers are toppers capillaries that are intended to be worn with the hair tied back. They are positioned back from the front edge. The densifying powder is then very useful to mask the difference in hair density between the pony and our forehead.
Some women also use a little densifying powder with a classic hair topper , to hide the transition at the front edge if they don't wear bangs or highlights and don't want to position the topper too far forward.
Densifying powder is therefore a solution that can be interesting to consider, especially in the case of incipient alopecia, when you don't feel ready to switch to a hair hair topper yet. This can allow you to easily and effectively mask your alopecia. However, in the longer term and in the case of advanced alopecia, my opinion is that the hair hair topper or the wig will be a more interesting solution to really find yourself.
