When deciding to buy a hair topper, choosing the right base size is very important. The size of the hair topper base will determine the final look, as well as the comfort you feel day to day when wearing your hairpiece.
The role of a hairpiece base
When you have androgenetic alopecia and are considering wearing a hair topper, it is usually because you have experienced significant hair loss. You should therefore carefully choose a base size that suits the extent of your hair loss. The more advanced the hair loss, the larger the base should be to compensate for it. If the base is too small, bald spots may still be visible, especially at the back of the head, where the hair topper hair parts. Conversely, if your hair loss is still very mild, a smaller base will be enough to conceal it.
It is also important for the hair topper clips to attach to areas unaffected by hair loss, both for comfort and to avoid pulling on an area already weakened by androgenetic alopecia.
The different base sizes Comme un diadème hair toppers
Several base sizes are available to suit different degrees of female hair loss. The available base sizes are 6 x 6, 7 x 7, 8 x 8, and 9 x 9. These measurements refer to the length and width of the hairpiece base in inches. These are standard sizes that can fit any head circumference, unlike wig sizes. However, you should choose a base size according to the extent of your hair loss, as well as the level of coverage and comfort you want.
6 x 6: A base size suited to very early-stage hair loss

Comme un diadème occasionally offers 6 x 6-inch base sizes for women with very early-stage androgenetic alopecia. This base size is also perfect for women who want to wear a hair topper purely for aesthetic reasons, without necessarily experiencing hair loss.
7 x 7 base: The choice for moderate hair loss

For moderate hair loss, the 7 x 7 base provides enough coverage. This wide base is perfect for women trying a hair topper for the first time. It combines the comfort of a wide base with enough coverage to compensate for moderate hair loss.
8 x 8: The perfect base size for advanced hair loss

For advanced androgenetic alopecia—that is, hair loss across the entire top of the head that is becoming quite visible—the 8 x 8 base is the best choice. It’s wide enough to cover and compensate for significant hair loss. The clips attach to the hair at the sides rather than on top of the head, making this base very comfortable for everyday wear. The baldness is no longer visible at all.
9 x 9: The base size for hair toppers suited to very extensive hair loss

9 x 9
Very extensive hair loss is highly visible across the entire top of the head and also extends to the sides and back. The small amount of hair remaining on top can make it difficult to attach smaller bases. The clips need to be secured in areas with enough hair to hold the hair topper in place. 9 x 9 bases are ideal for this type of hair loss. They provide optimal coverage, and the added density perfectly compensates for significant hair loss. The comfort of this large base is also greatly appreciated.
What about alopecia areata or total hair loss?

When a woman is experiencing total hair loss or alopecia areata, Comme un diadème recommends choosing a wig instead. Alopecia areata patches tend to change location and/or size over time, so the clips on a hair topper could end up in a bald area. A wig prevents this because it covers the entire head. One advantage of a wig is that it’s easier to choose your preferred color and length. When wearing a wig, you can tuck all of your hair under a wig cap, so you don’t have to blend it with the hair on the hairpiece! You’re free to go from blonde to brunette, and from long to short, as you please 😀
