On May 6, 2023, I finally got married after 18 years of relationship with the one who is now my husband. He took “a little” time before proposing! I was obviously looking forward to this wedding! But I was also quite apprehensive because I have had androgenetic alopecia since I was 20 years old. So I had to find a solution to look my best on the big day 😉
As you probably know, the hair topper was obviously my solution, but it didn't come without some doubts and apprehensions. I share everything in this article!
My apprehensions
My androgenetic alopecia was diagnosed when I was 20 years old. At that time, it wasn't very noticeable yet. But 10 years later, my scalp started to really thin out, and my alopecia became visible. I often found myself thinking about my future wedding with apprehension. How would I be able to feel beautiful on that day? Would I be able to achieve a decent hairstyle? All of this worried and saddened me a lot.
To be honest, I even found myself resenting my partner for not proposing faster because of that. I thought that the longer he waited, the more disastrous and pathetic the result would be.
But around 30, it was also the age when I wore my first hair topper. Discovering this solution was a real relief for me in my daily life. But it also removed those apprehensions related to my potential future wedding! I now knew that I could feel good that day despite my progressing alopecia over the years.
Here is the state of my alopecia a few weeks before my wedding:

It may not seem catastrophic here. But my alopecia is so extensive that it would have been really complicated to have a beautiful hairstyle. A lot of thickening powder would have been needed. And the bun would have definitely been very low in volume, which I think would have ruined the look on the wedding day.
A hair topper, yes, but with what hairstyle?
I was ultimately relieved to know that I would have a worthy hairstyle for the big day. But as a regular hair topper user, I also know that it can sometimes shift a bit during the day. My hairline is very sparse. Even a slight shift of a few millimeters can quickly become visible (at least to me). In my daily life, I know I have the reflex to check from time to time that everything is in place. But I knew I might not have the opportunity to do so on the big day. I was also afraid that the bun wouldn't hold up and that I would turn into a pumpkin with a toupee after midnight!
So I first thought about opting for a romantic hairstyle with my hair down. Because I thought that the pressure backward would be less significant than with a voluminous bun and that a simpler structure from the start might hold up better over time.
But during the fittings, the hairstylist also did a trial hairstyle with a bun. And it was a revelation for me! Surprisingly, I felt my hairstyle was much more secure, and it didn't pull back at all as I had expected!
Feel free to check out the video of the two types of hairstyles I tested (French version, the English version is also online on the channel):
I still hesitated for a long time because I didn't know in advance what it would be like on a full day as eventful as a wedding. But deep down, I felt that I wanted a bun to go with my Disney princess dress! So I decided to make my choice not based on my alopecia, the hair topper, and the stress related to it, but rather based on what I truly wanted deep down.
So I took the risk of opting for the bun for the wedding!
So, how did it go on the big day?
On the big day, the hairdresser had placed about fifty pins in my bun to secure it! The hair topper didn't move an inch, from 9 AM to 5 AM. I didn't even really feel the need to check it several times during the day because I could tell it wasn't moving. I had put a bit of thickening powder on my hairline just in case to secure myself in case of a slight shift of the hair topper.

I was so afraid that the hair topper would move, that I wouldn't feel it, and then realize later that it was visible in the photos (and that it could potentially be seen by everyone at the wedding).
But during the day and then the evening, I felt it was perfectly in place! Because a hair topper that shifts can be felt. I was able to move, dance freely, and carry my children. In short, I was perfectly free in my movements.
I received over 1000 photos from the wedding. I don't know how many there are of me, but I can say that my hair topper is NOT visible in ANY of them! And that was a real relief for me. I wasn't afraid that people would notice at the wedding that I was wearing a hair topper. Everyone knows I wear one because I don't hide it. But I didn't want to see my wedding photos ruined by a poorly positioned toupee!

So today I am really happy to assure you that yes, you can be perfect on the big day with a hair topper!

My advice is to choose a hairstylist who specializes in weddings and is skilled in her field. She will definitely know how to work with a hair topper, even if it's her first time with this type of product. Don't hesitate to have the roots touched up if the color is a bit lighter than yours. This will create a color match and the result will still be very natural (that's what I did with my Anaïs hair topper, which is initially much lighter than my hair).

Hi, I'm undergoing chemotherapy and I'm losing my hair, it's thinning.
I had heard about hair toppers, but then I was also told that since they are more fragile, the clips won't hold, so what to do?
And also, with the clips, there's a risk of damaging the remaining hair and causing it to fall out.
What do you recommend?
Or maybe a wig, but I still have hair, just not much.
I also have shoulder-length hair
Bonjour Madame,
Women with alopecia have fine hair, and hair toppers are specifically designed for fragile and fine hair.
Moreover, to secure the hair topper, instead of using clips, you can use sensitive grips.
